In the world of web security, we used to have a “set and forget” mentality where you bought an SSL certificate, installed it and ignored it for a year or two. Those days are now officially over.

I’ve been looking at a major shift driven by Google and Apple that is about to change how every business manages its online presence.

What’s Happening?

Starting March 15, 2026, the “shelf life” of a standard SSL/TLS certificate (the tech that gives you that little green padlock) is being reduced from 13 months to roughly 6 months (200 days) and this isn’t a once-off change. The industry roadmap is moving toward a future where certificates may only last 47 days by 2029.

Essentially, the “Digital Driver’s License” for your website is becoming a short-term permit that requires constant review and renewal.

Why the Rush? (And Why It’s Actually Good)

It feels like extra homework, but the goal is to achieve “Crypto Agility” and will result in a number of security improvements, including…

Faster Response: If a security flaw is found in the way certificates are encrypted, shorter lifespans allow the entire internet to “reset” to a safer standard in months rather than years.

Reduced Window of Risk: If a hacker manages to steal your SSL security key, they can currently use it for over a year. Shorter lifespans kill that stolen key much faster.

Trust: It forces website owners to prove they still own and control their domain more frequently, making it harder for “ghost” sites or abandoned domains to be used for phishing.

The “Subscription” Model: How Paid SSL certs Will Work

You might be thinking: “I just paid for a 3-year SSL Cert. Am I losing money?”

Not exactly. Major hosting companies and Certificate Authorities (CAs) like Sectigo are changing to a Subscription Model.

When you buy a “12-month SSL,” you are paying for a year of coverage, not a single 12-month file where…

The host will issue a certificate valid for 200 days.

At the 190-day mark, their system will automatically generate a new certificate and swap it out.

But There’s Catch:

This only works if your hosting environment supports automation. If you are on an old server that requires you to copy-paste “CSR codes” and “Private Keys” manually, you are now going to have to do that twice as often, and soon, eight times as often.

Why You Should Review Your Domain and SSL cert Today

If your website SSL certificate expires and isn’t renewed in time, your visitors won’t see your homepage. Instead, they will see a giant red warning: “Your connection is not private.” For a small business, that is the digital equivalent of a “Closed by Health Inspector” sign on your front door.

Between now and March 15th, we have a window of opportunity to:

Inventory: Ensure every sub-domain and landing page you own is accounted for.

Automate: Switch your WordPress site to a host or a service that uses the ACME protocol (like Let’s Encrypt), which handles these renewals automatically so you never have to think about them.

Last Call: Renew any manual certificates before the 15th to buy yourself one last full year of “breathing room” while we modernize your setup.

Website security is no longer a “once a year” task, it’s a continuous process. Make sure you get your site checked before your “Green Padlock” doesn’t turn red when you’re not looking.

If you’ve got a business, chances are you’ve got a website humming away in the background, probably built on WordPress like so many of us (34%, according to builtwith.com). And if that’s the case, you’ve likely encountered those annoying Cookie Consent Compliance banners popping up everywhere. You know, the ones asking for consent before your site loads all its bells and whistles? Cookies sound harmless, like those free samples at a bakery, but in the world of online privacy, they’re a big deal. Especially under European laws that could slap you with hefty fines if you’re not careful.

I’ve seen first hand how easy it is for even well-intentioned sites to trip up on cookie compliance and I’d to try to break it all down for you in plain English (with some lame analogies to make the techy bits less techy). We’ll cover what cookies really are, why WordPress cookie plugins often fall short of full compliance with European privacy laws like the GDPR, where they go wrong, and the sneaky ways non-essential cookies can linger on users’ devices, even after they close their browser. By the end, you’ll know why it’s worth auditing your setup and maybe chatting with a pro to fix any gaps. Let’s dive in and get started.

What Are Website Cookies, anyway? A Simple Analogy

Imagine walking into a local shop and the shopkeeper jots down a quick note about your preferences: “Loves chocolate chip cookies, visits every Tuesday.”

Next time you stop by, they have your favourites ready, making your experience smoother and more personalised. That’s essentially what cookies do—they’re tiny text files that websites store on your device to remember things about you.

Cookies aren’t evil; they’re practical. They keep you logged in, remember your shopping cart, or track how you navigate a site so the owners can improve it. But here’s the catch: some of these “notes” contain personal info, like your browsing habits or location. And here in Europe, laws treat that like handling someone’s private diary, you need to get permission first.

There are a few main types of cookies, and understanding them is key to seeing where cookie consent compliance issues creep in:

Essential (or Strictly Necessary) Cookies: These are the bare-bones ones your site needs to function. Think of them as the shop’s door lock—without it, the place can’t open. They handle basics like user authentication or security. Under the GDPR, these don’t require consent because they’re vital.

Functional (or Preference) Cookies: These remember your choices, like language settings or font size. Continuing our local shop analogy; The shopkeeper keeping a note that you prefer decaf so they brew it just for you. Nice, but not essential.

Analytics (or Performance) Cookies: These gather data on how visitors use the site, like which pages are popular. It’s like the shop owner counting foot traffic to decide store hours. They help optimise, but they can track users across sessions.

Marketing (or Advertising) Cookies: The sneaky ones. They track your behaviour to serve targeted ads, often from third parties like Google or Facebook. Think of the shopkeeper sharing (or selling) your preferences with other stores so they can send you flyers. It’s helpful for them, but annoying and invasive for you.

So, where’s the problem? Many sites (and plugins) blur these lines, classifying too many cookies as “essential” to avoid asking for consent. But more on that later…

The European Privacy Landscape: GDPR and ePrivacy Explained

If us European people visit your site, you must play by EU rules and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the big one since 2018. It’s like a strict librarian shushing anyone mishandling books (data). It requires transparent handling of personal data, including cookies that might identify users.

Then there’s the ePrivacy Directive (often called the “Cookie Directive”), which specifically targets electronic communications and cookies. It says you need explicit consent for non-essential cookies before they’re set. No more “implied consent” from just browsing. Users must actively opt in. They cannot be automatically opted in and then be told how to opt out.

Why does this matter for your WordPress site? Fines can reach up to 4% of your revenue, and regulators like Data Protection Commission or the ICO in the UK are cracking down. In recent years, we’ve seen multimillion-euro penalties for cookie mishaps. As a business person, you know cookies help with marketing and analytics, but getting it wrong could cost you big.

WordPress Cookie Plugins: A Good Start, But Not the Full Bakery

WordPress makes it easy to add cookie consent compliance with plugins like CookieBot, CookieYes, Complianz, or GDPR Cookie Consent. These tools scan your site for cookies, generate banners, and supposedly block non-consented ones. Sounds perfect, right? But here’s the conversational truth: they’re not always fully compliant, especially with European laws.

Let’s break it down with real-world issues. First, many plugins don’t catch all cookies when a user opts out. Imagine your shopkeeper promising not to note preferences but still scribbling away in a hidden notebook. That’s what happens when plugins fail to block third-party scripts properly.

For example, some plugins claim to block cookies, but users report that third-party cookies (from embeds like YouTube videos or Google Analytics) slip through if not perfectly integrated. In one case, a plugin couldn’t remove existing third-party cookies programmatically, leaving them active even after opt-out. Why? Third-party cookies are set by external domains, and blocking them requires precise script management which is something free versions often don’t include.

Take Complianz, a popular choice. While it blocks many cookies, users have noted issues where it demands configurations that don’t exist (like for local Matomo analytics), potentially leading to incomplete blocking. If your site uses plugins for social sharing or forms, cookies from those might not get flagged, meaning they’re set before consent. Reddit threads are full of developers venting about this: “Many plugins claim cookie consent compliance but still load cookies before acceptance.”

Another biggie: poor classification of cookies as “Essential.” Plugins auto-scan, but they’re not foolproof. Analytics cookies might get calssified as essential when they’re really performance-based, requiring consent. For instance, Complianz sometimes shows a “marketing” category even with no marketing cookies, confusing users and risking non-compliance if it misleads on what’s truly necessary. Or take CookieYes which is great for basics, but free versions limit scans, missing cookies from complex setups like multilingual sites.

I’ve audited sites where plugins classified Google Tag Manager cookies as essential, but under GDPR, if they’re used for ads, they’re not. This misclassification means no cookie consent is asked, violating the law. Think of it like to labelling junk food as “healthy”—it might slide past at first, but regulators will eventually call you out.

And don’t get me started on accessibility. Many banners aren’t WCAG-compliant, making them hard for disabled users to interact with, which ties into broader GDPR fairness requirements as well as the European Accessibility Act, which became law in Ireland on June 28, 2025, extending accessibility requirements to a wider range of consumer products and services, including e-commerce services, to be accessible to people with disabilities across the EU.

The Persistent Problem: Cookies That Stick Around (And the Risks)

Now, let’s talk storage. Cookies aren’t floating in the cloud; they’re saved locally on a user’s device as simple text files in browser folders. Session cookies vanish when you close the browser—like a temporary note tossed in the trash. But persistent cookies? They linger for days, months, or years, even after shutdown.

Non-essential ones, like marketing cookies, shouldn’t be set without consent, but if a plugin slips up, they end up stored anyway. If someone picks up your lost phone or laptop, they could access those files and they information they store.

Browsers can store cookies unencrypted, so a thief with basic tech skills could extract them and this might reveal login sessions, preferences, or tracking data, leading to identity theft or session hijacking. Cybercriminals steal cookies to bypass security and you can think of it like copying your house key from a hidden spot. 2024 reports showed hackers using stolen devices to harvest cookies for ransomware or fraud.

For businesses, this means liability. If your site’s cookies contribute to a breach, you could face lawsuits under GDPR’s data protection mandates.

Time to Audit: Check Your Setup and Get Help

So, how do you avoid this cookie crumble? Start by reviewing your site. Use tools like browser dev consoles (hit F12) to inspect cookies and see what’s set (and when). Test your site’s opt-out by rejecting cookies and check if analytics still fire (tools like Google Analytics Debugger will help).

But honestly, as a busy business owner, you shouldn’t DIY this. Plugins are a start, but for true cookie consent compliance, get help from someone who can manually audit and reclassify cookies, integrate blockers properly, and ensure your banner is user-friendly. It’s not just about avoiding fines; it’s about building trust with your audience.

Cookies are powerful but troublesome without proper handling. WordPress plugins help, but their shortcomings in blocking and classification can leave you exposed. Add in persistent storage risks, and it’s clear: Privacy isn’t optional. Take action today. Your business (and users) will thank you.

In the fast-paced digital world, your WordPress website is often the first point of contact between your business and potential customers. As the owner of a small WordPress website development company, I’ve seen first-hand how many site owners treat their websites like set-it-and-forget-it appliances. But here’s the harsh reality: neglecting WordPress maintenance isn’t just a minor oversight – it’s a recipe for disaster that can drain your finances and tarnish your reputation over time.

WordPress powers over 40% of the web (w3techs report), making it a prime target for threats and a platform that requires ongoing care to stay efficient and secure. This blog post dives deep into the hidden costs of deferred maintenance, exploring angles like security vulnerabilities, performance degradation, and the broader implications for your business. We’ll emphasise why proactive upkeep is an investment rather than an expense, and how ignoring it can turn your site into a ticking time bomb. If you’re a business owner or webmaster with a basic understanding of WordPress-familiar with plugins, themes, and the dashboard-this technical yet accessible guide will arm you with the knowledge to protect your online presence.

Is Your WordPress Website a Ticking Time Bomb? The Cost of Deferred Maintenance

Imagine this: You’ve built a beautiful WordPress site using a popular theme like Astra, Divi or Elementor, installed essential plugins like Yoast SEO and WooCommerce, and launched it to the world. Traffic starts flowing, leads convert, and everything seems fine. But beneath the surface, without regular updates, your site is accumulating vulnerabilities that could explode at any moment.

Deferred maintenance refers to postponing essential tasks like core updates, plugin patches, theme upgrades, and database optimisations. WordPress releases updates frequently-often multiple times a year for the core software alone-to address security flaws, improve compatibility, and enhance features. Ignoring these can lead to exploitable weaknesses.

From a technical standpoint, consider the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database. In 2023 alone, over 1,000 vulnerabilities were reported in WordPress plugins and themes. For instance, a flaw in a popular plugin like Contact Form 7 could allow SQL injection attacks if not patched. SQL injection is a technique where hackers insert malicious code into your database queries, potentially extracting sensitive data like user emails or payment details.

The financial toll? A single security breach can cost small businesses from €100’s to €1,000’s in direct remediation, according to cybersecurity reports from firms like IBM. This includes hiring experts to clean malware, restore backups, and secure the site. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Downtime during a hack can last hours or days, leading to lost revenue.

Moreover, deferred maintenance affects site speed and reliability. Outdated plugins can conflict with newer PHP versions (WordPress recommends PHP 8.0+ for optimal performance). Without regular optimisation, such as clearing transients, optimising images, or using caching plugins like WP Super Cache, your site’s load time can balloon from 2 seconds to 5+ seconds. Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool often flags these issues, and studies show that every additional second of load time can reduce conversions by 7%.

In essence, your WordPress site becomes a ticking time bomb because vulnerabilities compound over time. Hackers use automated bots to scan for outdated software, exploiting known issues from the WordPress.org repository. The cost of deferred maintenance isn’t immediate; it’s insidious, building up until a breach forces a reactive, expensive fix.

Beyond the Hack: The Reputational Damage of a Neglected WordPress Site

Security breaches grab headlines, but the reputational fallout from a neglected WordPress site often lingers longer and cuts deeper. When your site gets hacked, it’s not just data at risk – it’s your brand’s trustworthiness.

Picture a scenario where malware redirects visitors to phishing sites or injects spam links into your content. Users landing on your page might see defaced content, like graffiti on a storefront. According to Google’s Transparency Report, over 50,000 sites are flagged weekly for malware, and WordPress sites are disproportionately affected due to their popularity.

Reputational damage manifests in several ways. First, customer trust erodes. If a visitor encounters a “This site may harm your computer” warning from Google Safe Browsing (triggered by unpatched vulnerabilities) they’ll bounce immediately. Rebuilding that trust requires not just fixing the site but also communicating transparently via emails or social media, which takes time and resources.

Second, negative reviews and word-of-mouth spread like wildfire. On platforms like Trustpilot or Google Reviews, a single hacked incident can lead to one-star ratings complaining about “unsecure site” or “lost data.” For small businesses, where 80% of customers read reviews before purchasing, this can decimate leads. I’ve advised clients whose neglected sites led to data leaks, resulting in GDPR complaints in Europe-fines starting at €10,000 for non-compliance with data protection.

From a technical angle, neglect impacts SEO, which ties directly to reputation. Search engines like Google penalise sites with security issues or poor performance. An outdated site might drop in rankings due to Core Web Vitals failures-metrics like “Largest Contentful Paint” (LCP) and “Cumulative Layout Shift” (CLS) that measure user experience. If your site uses an old theme without mobile optimisation, it could fail Google’s mobile-first indexing, pushing you down in search results.

Furthermore, social proof suffers. If you’re sharing content via LinkedIn or embedding feeds on your site, a hack could expose followers to risks, leading to unfollows or blocks. Reputational recovery isn’t cheap; hiring PR firms or running ad campaigns to restore image can cost thousands, far outweighing the $50–$200 monthly for professional maintenance.

In short, beyond the hack lies a web of intangible losses. A neglected site doesn’t just lose data-it loses credibility, turning loyal customers into vocal detractors and scaring away prospects.

The Cascade of Financial Burdens: Direct and Indirect Costs

Delving deeper into the financial implications, neglecting WordPress maintenance creates a cascade of costs that extend far beyond initial fixes. Let’s break it down into direct and indirect expenses.

Direct costs include emergency interventions. When a site crashes due to an incompatible update or bloated database, you might need to pay developers €100 to €200 per hour for troubleshooting. Tools like phpMyAdmin reveal overgrown tables from un-optimised plugins, but without regular cleanups, queries slow down, leading to 500 Internal Server Errors.

Indirect costs are sneakier. Lost productivity is a big one-your team spends hours dealing with site issues instead of core business. For e-commerce sites using WooCommerce, neglected stock sync plugins can cause inventory errors, leading to overselling and refunds. Analytics show that cart abandonment rises by 20% on slow sites, translating to thousands in lost sales annually.

Opportunity costs add up too. While you’re firefighting, competitors with well-maintained sites capture market share. If your site uses advanced features like custom post types or APIs, neglect can break integrations, halting automations like email marketing via Mailchimp plugins.

Why Proactive WordPress Maintenance Is an Investment, Not an Expense

Shifting gears, let’s reframe maintenance as a strategic investment. Proactive care-regular updates, backups, and monitoring-mitigates risks and yields returns.

Technically, start with automated tools. Plugins like UpdraftPlus for daily backups ensure quick restores, while security suites like Wordfence scan for malware in real-time, blocking threats via firewalls. Schedule core updates via the WP dashboard or managed hosting like SiteGround, which handles them seamlessly.

Performance-wise, invest in optimisation. Use WP-Optimise to clean databases, reducing query times from 200ms to 50ms. Implement CDNs like Cloudflare to cache assets, improving global load speeds and SEO scores.

Financially, the ROI is clear. Spending $100 monthly on maintenance averts $5,000+ breaches. It also boosts revenue: Faster sites convert 2–3x better, per Aberdeen Group data. For SEO, regular content updates and schema markup keep you ranking high, driving organic traffic worth thousands in ad equivalents.

Reputationally, a maintained site builds loyalty. Features like SSL certificates (renewed via Let’s Encrypt) signal security, while uptime monitoring with tools like UptimeRobot prevents downtime embarrassments.

Other benefits include compliance. With plugins like GDPR Cookie Consent, you stay ahead of regulations, avoiding fines. Scalability improves too-updated sites handle plugins like Elementor Pro without conflicts, enabling growth.

Best Practices for WordPress Maintenance

To avoid pitfalls:

Update core, themes, and plugins regularly.

Have a backup schedule with version control.

Monitor security with regular website scans.

Add two-factor authentication to your site.

Optimise database performance quarterly.

Test changes in staging environments.

Conclusion: Safeguard Your Digital Future

Neglecting WordPress maintenance invites hidden costs that erode finances and reputation. From ticking time bombs of vulnerabilities to reputational scars and financial cascades, the risks are real. Yet, proactive maintenance flips the script-turning potential losses into gains.

In the world of website management, we spend a lot of time talking about firewalls, malware scanners, and complex security plugins. We harden our servers and SSL-encrypt everything. But in this race to build a digital fortress, we often overlook the most critical, dynamic, and unpredictable vulnerability of WordPress website security: the human element.

Your WordPress website isn’t just code; it’s a living platform managed by people. And it’s the everyday habits and decisions of these users—your employees, your content creators, even yourself—that can either fortify your defences or leave the front door wide open for attackers.

At WP Cork, we’ve seen first-hand that the strongest technical security can be undone by a single moment of human error. That’s why shifting the focus from purely technical solutions to empowering your team is the most effective security upgrade you can make. This isn’t about pointing fingers; it’s about creating a culture of security where every user becomes a vigilant defender of your digital presence.

Let’s break down the essential security practices that empower your team and transform your weakest link into your greatest asset.

Beyond the Basics: Passwords, Authentication, and Access

We all know we should use strong passwords. Yet, “Password123” and “CompanyName2025” remain stubbornly popular. The truth is, simply telling your team to “create a strong password” is no longer enough. The modern approach is about creating a system that makes strong security the easiest option.

The New Standard for Passwords

A truly strong password isn’t just a random jumble of characters. The best practice today is to use a passphrase. Think of a short, memorable, but nonsensical sentence. For example, APurpleGiraffeAte$MyBlueSocks! is infinitely stronger and easier to remember than R7&x!z@9pQ.

The key rules for modern password hygiene are:

Length is King: Aim for a minimum of 12-16 characters. A longer passphrase is much harder to crack than a shorter, complex one.

Uniqueness is Non-Negotiable: Never reuse passwords across different services. If your LinkedIn password is breached, you don’t want attackers using it to access your WordPress admin dashboard.

Embrace Password Managers: How can anyone remember dozens of unique, long passphrases? They can’t. This is where password managers like Bitwarden or 1Password become essential business tools. They generate, store, and auto-fill highly secure passwords, meaning you only need to remember one master password. This single step eliminates the biggest cause of weak password usage.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Your Digital Deadbolt

If there’s one security measure you should stop debating and implement today, it’s Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).

2FA requires a user to provide two different types of evidence to prove their identity. The first is something they know (their password). The second is something they have (a temporary code from an app on their phone, like Google Authenticator or Authy).

Think of it this way: even if a hacker steals your password, it’s useless to them without the physical device that generates the second code. For a WordPress site, this simple layer of protection can stop the vast majority of unauthorised login attempts in their tracks. Plugins like Wordfence or Solid Security make setting up 2FA on your WordPress much easier. It’s a minor inconvenience for a massive security payoff.

The Art of Vigilance: Spotting Phishing Scams Aimed at You

Hackers know that it’s often easier to trick a person than to break through a firewall. This is the entire premise behind phishing attacks, and they are becoming increasingly sophisticated and targeted towards WordPress users.

A phishing attack is a fraudulent attempt, usually made through email, to trick you into revealing sensitive information like your username, password, or financial details. Spear phishing is an even more dangerous version where the attacker customises the message for you specifically, often using your name, company, or role to appear legitimate.

A WordPress user might receive an email that looks like it’s from “WordPress Support” urging them to click a link to fix a security issue or to update a plugin. The link, however, leads to a fake login page that looks identical to the real one. Once you enter your credentials, the attacker has them.

How to Spot a Phish:

Empower your users by teaching them to be healthily sceptical of unsolicited emails. Here’s a simple checklist:

Check the Sender’s Address: Don’t just look at the display name. Hover over or click on the sender’s name to reveal the full email address. An official-looking email from “WordPress Admin” that comes from secure-update@wp-login-service.net is a massive red flag.

Hover, Don’t Click: Before clicking any link in an email, hover your mouse cursor over it. The actual destination URL will appear in the bottom corner of your browser or email client. If the link text says yourwebsite.com/wp-admin but the URL points to a strange, unrelated domain, it’s a trap.

Look for a Sense of Urgency or Threats: Phishing emails often try to panic you. Phrases like “Your Account Has Been Suspended” or “Urgent Security Alert: Log In Immediately” are designed to make you act before you think.

Watch for Poor Grammar and Spelling: While attackers are getting better, many phishing emails still contain awkward phrasing, spelling mistakes, or grammatical errors that you wouldn’t find in an official communication.

Creating a policy where team members feel comfortable asking, “Hey, does this email look suspicious?” without fear of being judged is a cornerstone of a strong security culture.

The Principle of Least Privilege: Not Everyone Needs the Keys to the Kingdom

One of the most common and dangerous user management mistakes is giving every user an Administrator role. It’s convenient, but it’s also a huge security risk. If an employee with full admin rights has their account compromised, the attacker gains complete control of your website. They can install malicious code, delete content, and lock you out entirely.

WordPress has a built-in role management system for a reason. You should always assign users the role with the minimum level of access they need to perform their job. This is known as the Principle of Least Privilege (PoLP).

A Quick Guide to WordPress User Roles:

Administrator: Has full control over the site. Can add/remove users, change settings, and install plugins/themes. Reserve this for yourself and, if necessary, your trusted web developer (like us at WP Cork!).

Editor: Can publish and manage posts and pages, including those written by other users. They can’t change site settings or install plugins. Ideal for your content manager or head of marketing.

Author: Can write, publish, and manage their own posts. They can’t modify other users’ content or access settings. Perfect for regular blog contributors.

Contributor: Can write and manage their own posts but cannot publish them. An Editor or Administrator must review and publish their work. Great for guest bloggers or new team members.

Subscriber: Can only manage their profile. This is the default role for anyone who signs up for an account.

By correctly assigning roles, you dramatically limit the potential damage of a compromised account. An attacker who gets into a Contributor’s account can do very little, whereas one who gets into an Admin account can do everything. Take 10 minutes today to review your users under Users > All Users in your WordPress dashboard. You might be surprised who has unnecessary power.

Your Security To-Do List: The Human Responsibilities

Beyond these core pillars, building a truly secure environment relies on consistent, responsible user habits. Protecting your WordPress website is a shared responsibility. By empowering all of your website users with the knowledge and tools to be secure, you’re not just preventing breaches; you’re investing in the long-term resilience and success of your online presence.

The Update Imperative

Those update notifications in your WordPress dashboard aren’t just suggestions; they are critical security announcements. The vast majority of hacked WordPress sites are compromised through vulnerabilities in outdated plugins, themes, or core files. When a security hole is discovered, developers release a patch in the form of an update. Delaying that update is like hearing a window smash downstairs and deciding to investigate in the morning.

Yes, updates can sometimes cause conflicts. That’s why the user’s responsibility includes ensuring a recent backup of the site exists before hitting the update button. A good managed WordPress host or a service like ours at WP Cork can automate backups and even test updates in a staging environment to prevent issues.

Workstation and Network Hygiene

Your website’s security doesn’t start at the login screen; it starts on the device you use to access it.

Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Admin Work: That free café Wi-Fi is great for Browse, but it’s a terrible place to log into your website’s backend. These networks are often unsecured, making it easy for snoops to intercept your data (including your password). If you must work remotely, use a trusted Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your connection.

Keep Your Own Device Secure: Ensure the computer you’re using has up-to-date antivirus software and that your operating system (Windows or macOS) has all the latest security patches installed.

Conclusion: Building Your Human Firewall

Technical security tools are the locks on your doors and windows. They are essential. But your users—your team—are the ones who decide whether to leave the door unlocked, hand the keys to a stranger, or challenge a suspicious visitor.

By fostering a culture of security, you build a human firewall that is more adaptable and intelligent than any piece of software. It starts with implementing these best practices:

Enforce strong, unique passphrases and the use of a password manager.

Mandate Two-Factor Authentication for all users with login access.

Train your team to be vigilant and sceptical of potential phishing attacks.

Implement the Principle of Least Privilege by auditing and assigning proper user roles.

Create a clear policy for timely updates and safe Browse habits.

In today’s digital-first world, your website is often the primary point of contact for customers and clients. But is that door open to everyone? With the new European Accessibility Act (EAA) now in effect as of June 2025, ensuring your website is accessible to people with disabilities is not just a matter of good practice—it’s a legal imperative. For businesses running on WordPress, this presents both a challenge and a significant opportunity.

The digital landscape is shifting. The conversation around accessibility is moving from a niche concern to a mainstream business requirement. This article explores why accessibility matters, how it benefits your business, and the practical steps you can take to make your WordPress website compliant with the globally recognised Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard. We are actively helping companies navigate the journey to WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance and we believe that an accessible website is a better website for everyone, not just those with disabilities.

Designing for All: Making Your WordPress Website Truly Accessible

At its core, web accessibility is about designing and developing your website so that people with a wide range of disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with it. This includes individuals with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive impairments.

For a WordPress site, this means looking beyond the aesthetics. It requires a conscious effort to build a site that is robust and usable for all. This is where the WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines become our roadmap. These guidelines are founded on four key principles:

Perceivable:
Users must be able to perceive the information being presented. This means providing text alternatives for non-text content like images (alt text), offering captions for videos, and ensuring sufficient colour contrast.

Operable:
Users must be able to operate the interface. This involves making sure all functionality is available from a keyboard, giving users enough time to read and use content, and avoiding content that could cause seizures.

Understandable:
Information and the operation of the user interface must be understandable. This means making text readable and understandable, ensuring web pages appear and operate in predictable ways, and helping users avoid and correct mistakes.

Robust:
Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies like screen readers.

The Business Case for WordPress Website Accessibility

While the ethical argument for accessibility is clear, the business case is just as compelling. An accessible website can lead to:

Expanded Market Reach:
In Ireland, an estimated 1 in 7 people have a disability. By making your website accessible, you are opening your digital doors to a significant and often overlooked market segment.

Enhanced Brand Reputation:
A commitment to accessibility demonstrates social responsibility and a dedication to inclusivity. This can significantly enhance your brand’s reputation and foster positive customer sentiment.

Improved SEO:
Many accessibility best practices overlap with search engine optimisation (SEO) best practices. For example, using descriptive alt text for images, clear heading structures, and providing transcripts for videos can all improve your search engine rankings.

Future-Proofing Your Website:
The European Accessibility Act is a clear indicator of the direction of travel for digital regulations. By embracing accessibility now, you are future-proofing your website against further legislative changes and staying ahead of your competitors.

Legal Compliance:
The EAA has now made web accessibility a legal requirement for many businesses, including all e-commerce sites. Non-compliance can lead to significant fines and reputational damage.

WordPress Website Accessibility Tools and Best Practices You Can Implement Today

The good news for WordPress users is that the platform offers a wealth of tools and features to help you on your accessibility journey. Here are some practical steps you can take:

Choose an Accessibility-Ready Theme: Your theme is the foundation of your website’s design. When selecting a theme, look for those that are specifically labelled as “accessibility-ready.” These themes have been developed with accessibility best practices in mind.

Utilise Accessibility Plugins: There are numerous WordPress plugins designed to enhance your site’s accessibility. Plugins like WP Accessibility, Accessibility Checker, and premium solutions like accessiBe can help you identify and fix common accessibility issues.

Implement Best Practices for Content:

Add Alt Text to Images:
Always provide descriptive alternative text for your images. This allows screen reader users to understand the content of the image.

Use Proper Heading Structures:
Use H1, H2, H3, etc., tags logically to structure your content. This helps users with screen readers navigate your pages more easily.

Ensure Good Colour Contrast:
Use a colour contrast checker to ensure that your text is easily readable against its background. The WCAG 2.1 AA standard requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text.

Make Links Descriptive:
Instead of using “click here,” use descriptive anchor text that tells the user where the link will take them.

Ensure Keyboard Navigation:
Test your website to ensure that all interactive elements, including menus, forms, and buttons, can be operated using only a keyboard.

Get Some Help

Navigating the technical requirements of the WCAG 2.1 Level AA standard and the new European Accessibility Act can be a daunting task and your website support should conduct accessibility audits, implement necessary remediation, and provide ongoing support to ensure your website remains compliant and inclusive.

We work with clients to integrate accessibility into the very fabric of their websites, from the initial design concepts to the final code, helping to ensure that your WordPress site is not only meeting its legal obligations but is also providing an exceptional experience for all your users.

The Future is Accessible

The digital world should be an inclusive one. By embracing accessibility, you are not only complying with the law but also making a powerful statement about your company’s values. An accessible WordPress website is a cornerstone of a modern, forward-thinking digital strategy.

If you’re ready to make your WordPress website more accessible and compliant with the latest standards, get in touch with us today to build a more inclusive web, together.

WordPress doesn’t exist in a vacuum; it’s part of a larger, ever-evolving web technology landscape. Understanding these broader trends is crucial for building websites that remain relevant and performant. In 2025, several key trends are defining the future of web development:

AI-Powered Web Experiences: Beyond WordPress’s specific AI initiatives, Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming web development. From AI-assisted code generation tools like GitHub Copilot that automate repetitive tasks, to AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants providing real-time customer support, AI is streamlining development workflows and enhancing user interactions. This means more personalised content, dynamic interfaces, and intelligent automation that improves efficiency for businesses and provides richer experiences for users.

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs): Blurring the lines between websites and native mobile applications, PWAs offer offline capabilities, push notifications, and fast loading times, delivering an app-like experience directly from the browser. As mobile usage continues to dominate, PWAs are becoming a go-to solution for businesses seeking to provide seamless, high-performance experiences across all devices without the cost and complexity of developing separate native apps.

Voice Search Optimisation: With the proliferation of smart speakers and voice assistants, optimising websites for voice search is no longer optional. This involves structuring content with natural language, answering common questions directly, and leveraging schema markup to help search engines understand the context of your content. Websites that are optimised for voice will be better positioned to capture traffic from this growing segment of users.

API-First Design and Headless WordPress: The rise of microservices architecture is driving a move towards API-first development. This approach prioritises designing and documenting APIs before building the core application, enabling smoother integration between various web services and applications. For WordPress, this translates into “Headless WordPress”, where WordPress acts as a powerful content management system (CMS) for the backend, while the frontend is built using modern frameworks like React or Vue.js. This decoupling allows for greater flexibility, scalability, and faster content delivery, particularly for complex applications.

Cybersecurity Enhancements: As cyber threats grow in sophistication, cybersecurity remains a paramount concern. Web development in 2025 places a strong emphasis on robust security measures, including enhanced firewalls, real-time vulnerability monitoring, multi-factor authentication, and proactive threat detection. This is not just about preventing attacks, but also about building user trust and ensuring data integrity.

WordPress Security: Staying Ahead of the Curve

The interconnected nature of the web means that security is an ongoing battle. WordPress, being the world’s most popular CMS, is a frequent target for malicious actors. Therefore, staying informed about the latest vulnerabilities and implementing proactive security measures is non-negotiable.

Recent WordPress vulnerability reports, particularly from early June 2025, highlight a constant stream of newly discovered vulnerabilities in plugins and themes. For instance, the SolidWP Vulnerability Report for June 11, 2025, noted over 300 new vulnerabilities, with a significant number remaining unpatched by their respective developers. This underscores the critical importance of timely updates and robust security solutions.

Key security takeaways from recent reports include:

Plugin and Theme Vulnerabilities are a Major Entry Point: A substantial percentage of WordPress hacks originate from outdated or poorly coded plugins and themes. This is why regular updates are paramount.

AI’s Double-Edged Sword: While AI offers powerful tools for security, it also enables attackers to develop more sophisticated and automated exploits. This necessitates even stronger, AI-driven defence mechanisms.

Common Vulnerabilities Persist: Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), SQL Injection, and privilege escalation continue to be prevalent attack vectors. Implementing Web Application Firewalls (WAFs) and adhering to secure coding practices are essential defences.

The Rise of Malicious Networks: Recent reports, such as the one from The Hacker News on June 12, 2025, detailing how WordPress sites are being weaponised by sophisticated scam networks like VexTrio, underscore the scale and complexity of current threats. These networks compromise legitimate WordPress sites to redirect users to malicious content, highlighting the need for comprehensive security monitoring that detects even subtle anomalies.

Our maintenance services are built around these realities. We prioritise:

Proactive Updates: We ensure your WordPress core, themes, and plugins are always running the latest versions, patching known vulnerabilities as soon as updates are released.

Regular Security Scans: Our systems conduct daily or weekly scans for malware, suspicious activity, and file integrity changes, allowing us to detect and neutralise threats before they cause significant damage.

Robust Firewalls and Login Security: We implement strong firewalls and enforce best practices for login security, including strong password policies and multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Automated Backups: Regular, offsite backups are your ultimate safety net, ensuring that even in the worst-case scenario, your website can be quickly restored.

Performance Optimisation: A secure website is also a performant one. We continuously optimise your site’s speed through caching, image optimisation, and database optimisation, which not only improves user experience but can also indirectly enhance security by reducing server strain.

Why Ongoing Maintenance is Non-Negotiable

Ignoring website maintenance is akin to neglecting regular car service – eventually, something will break down, and the repairs will be far more costly and disruptive than preventative care. For WordPress websites, proactive maintenance is vital for:

Security: As discussed, vulnerabilities are constantly discovered. Timely updates and security monitoring are crucial to protect your site from hacks, malware, and data breaches.

Performance: A slow website frustrates users and negatively impacts your search engine rankings. Regular optimisation, including caching, image compression, and database clean-up, ensures a smooth and fast user experience.

Reliability: Broken links, outdated forms, and PHP errors can all disrupt your website’s functionality. Regular checks and fixes ensure your site remains fully operational.

SEO: Google prioritises secure, fast, and user-friendly websites. Consistent maintenance directly contributes to better search engine visibility.

Future-Proofing: The web is constantly evolving. Staying updated with the latest WordPress versions and technological trends ensures your website remains compatible, functional, and competitive.

WordPress, as an open-source platform, thrives on continuous innovation, driven by a global community of developers. The recent announcements and updates from the WordPress core team highlight a clear focus on enhancing user experience, streamlining development, and embracing the power of emerging technologies.

One of the most significant developments making waves in June 2025 is the official announcement of a new WordPress AI team. This isn’t about immediately integrating large language models (LLMs) directly into the core, but rather about building foundational components and canonical plugins that will abstract various AI provider APIs. This strategic approach will empower developers to leverage AI for tasks like content generation, image optimisation, and even layout suggestions, ultimately making website creation more efficient and dynamic. Imagine an AI assistant that helps you refine your blog post for better SEO or suggests compelling imagery based on your content – this is the future WordPress is building towards.

Another exciting innovation is the new View Transitions plugin. This community-driven plugin aims to replace jarring page-to-page navigation with smoother, animated transitions. Currently supported by leading browsers like Chrome, Edge, and Safari, View Transitions promise a more fluid and engaging user experience, akin to what you might find in native applications. While its direct integration into WordPress core is yet to be determined, its development signals a strong emphasis on modern web aesthetics and performance. For website owners, this means the potential for a more polished and professional user journey, leading to increased engagement and reduced bounce rates.

Beyond these headline features, the June 2025 developer updates also indicate a commitment to refining the core platform. Updates to the modern Sass module system in Gutenberg, improved compatibility for symlinks and file paths in WordPress Playground, and a new SQLite driver for enhanced database performance all contribute to a more stable, efficient, and developer-friendly environment. These technical advancements, while often unseen by the end-user, translate directly into faster loading times, fewer bugs, and a more robust foundation for your website.

Furthermore, we’re seeing a continued rise in the adoption of Block Themes and Full Site Editing, as well as exciting new releases from Divi and Elementor. This shift gives users greater control over their website’s design, allowing them to customise every element – from headers to footers – using the block editor. This can reduce the reliance on custom code for design changes, making WordPress more accessible to a wider audience when it comes to making day-to-day changes and updates. As Block Themes become more sophisticated, they will enable even more creative and flexible designs, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible within WordPress.

Website costs shouldn’t be a mystery, nor should they drain your resources. The web design market has evolved dramatically. Modern tools and platforms have levelled the playing field, letting businesses build professional sites without excessive agency markups or ongoing maintenance fees.

Your perfect solution depends entirely on your needs. Whether launching a local business website or scaling an enterprise platform, success comes from choosing powerful and flexible tools. That’s why platforms like WordPress power everything from small business sites to Fortune 500 companies — they deliver consistent results while keeping costs predictable and updates manageable.

The key? Start with your actual business requirements, not trendy features or unnecessary complexities. Choose an approach that allows you to control your digital presence while providing the scalability to grow. That’s a wise investment in web design.

Designing Websites On WordPress (One-Time: €200-€7,000)

WordPress powers over 43% of websites worldwide and for a good reason. While the platform is free, you’ll need themes for design, plugins for functionality, and hosting to keep your site running.

Most WordPress projects cost between €200 and €7,000. A basic blog might only require a premium theme, (€60-100) and hosting (€10/month), while business sites typically need additional premium plugins for forms, SEO, and security — usually totalling €300-€1,000.

Larger projects may include custom development or premium support, though costs remain significantly lower than custom-built sites.

WordPress scales seamlessly. Start with essentials and add features as needed. Since you own everything outright, there’s no monthly fee trap, and the vast developer community ensures endless possibilities for growth without rebuilding.

Understanding Website Design Costs

The web design marketplace has evolved significantly, offering solutions for every business need — from basic contact pages to complex customer management systems. Recent innovations have expanded your options while reshaping cost expectations.

Today’s choices balance convenience against control, templates versus custom work, and varying levels of support. While agencies still offer premium specialized services, new self-service platforms have made professional web design more accessible.

Your business goals drive the investment level. A restaurant might excel with a straightforward menu and location showcase, while an online store requires robust, error-free backend systems.

These distinct needs create natural price tiers, explaining why web design costs span from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars.

Why Does Such A Broad Range Exist

Web design’s wide price range reflects today’s market realities. While entry-level designers and automated tools make basic websites affordable, established agencies charge premium rates for their expertise and comprehensive services — resulting in similar-looking sites with vastly different costs.

Your technology choices greatly affect pricing. Custom coding demands more time and expertise than modern page builders and templates. Many providers bundle additional services like content creation and marketing strategy into their packages.

Location also shapes costs — design firms in major cities typically charge more than those in smaller markets or offshore locations.

Key Factors That Influence Pricing

Several key elements can push costs up or down when planning your website budget. Much like choosing between a compact car and a luxury vehicle, your website’s final price depends on the features and quality you need.

Factor

What You Should Know

Cost Impact

Size & Scale

A five-page business site costs less than a 50-page catalogue

Basic to Complex

Visual Design

Template-based designs save money; custom work costs more

€ to €€€

Core Features

Contact forms, basic: usually included; booking systems, galleries: extra

€ to €€

Tech Stack

Self-hosted platforms cost less than monthly website builders; custom coding demands premium rates

€ to €€€

Content Creation

DIY content saves money; professional writing adds costs

Optional €€

Launch Timeline

Standard timelines vs. rush fees

+30-50% For Rushing

Think of these factors as building blocks — you can mix and match based on your needs and budget. Start with the essentials that directly support your business goals. Many successful websites begin with core features and add more sophisticated elements as they grow. This approach helps you balance immediate needs with long-term value.

What’s Included In Website Design Pricing

Website costs go beyond just pushing pixels around. Let’s look at the key components that make up web design pricing and what you should actually get for your money:

Mock-ups & Wireframing

Before any design work begins, professional web designers create blueprints of your website. These planning documents, called wireframes and mock-ups, are the foundation for your entire project.

Wireframes outline the basic structure — where content blocks, images, and buttons will live on each page. Think of them as architectural drawings for your website. Mock-ups add colours, typography, and content to show how the final site will look.

Professional designers typically deliver:

Homepage design concepts (2-3 variations)

Key internal page layouts

Mobile/tablet responsive versions

Interactive prototypes for complex features

For smaller projects, expect 5-10 hours of wireframing work. More significant sites with complex user flows might need 20-30 hours to plan appropriately. This typically represents 15-25% of your total project budget.

Page Layouts & Templates

Beyond the homepage, your website needs consistent designs for different types of content. These templates ensure your blog posts, product pages, contact forms, and other sections maintain a unified look while serving their specific purposes.

A professional website design package typically includes the following:

Blog post/article layout

Product/service page design

Contact page template

About page layout

Category/archive pages

Search results layout

Custom 404 error page

Each template must work seamlessly across desktop and mobile devices while maintaining brand consistency. The number of unique templates directly impacts your project cost — more specialized layouts mean higher design investments.

The final templates should flex to accommodate different content lengths, image sizes, and functionality needs without breaking your site’s visual harmony.

Design & Development Hours

The bulk of your website’s cost comes from the hands-on work of designing and building it. This process typically breaks down into several phases:

Design Phase —

Creating custom graphics and icons

Selecting and optimizing images

Setting up typography systems

Implementing brand colours and styles

Development Phase —

Converting designs into working web pages

Setting up responsive layouts

Implementing interactive features

Testing across different devices and browsers

Optimizing page load speeds

Most projects require 30-80 hours of combined design and development time. Complex features, custom functionality, or extensive revisions can increase these numbers. Quality providers track their hours transparently and provide regular progress updates throughout the build.

Content Management System

Have you ever tried updating a website without proper management tools? Organizing a website can feel as challenging as managing a library without a proper filing system. Thankfully, WordPress CMS is here to help.

It is the essential backbone that empowers you to manage your site effortlessly, allowing you to make updates without needing a developer for every change. Any decent CMS should let you:

Edit content visually

Manage files and images

Control user access

Handle technical updates

Keep your site secure

Optimize for search engines

Let’s look at what different platforms cost:

Platform

Starting Cost

Annual Fees

Webflow

€14/mo

€168-2544/yr

Shopify

€29/mo

€348-27600/yr

Wix

€17/mo

€204-1908/yr

Squarespace

€16/mo

€192-624/yr

HubSpot CMS

€15/mo

€180-43200/yr

WordPress

€0

€0

Here’s where WordPress shines — it packs all the power of premium platforms without the monthly fees. While with subscription platforms, you are still subjected to constant price increases yearly. From mom-and-pop shops to Fortune 500 companies, businesses choose WordPress because it just works. Need to add features? There’s probably already a solution waiting for you, thanks to its massive collection of plugins and developer community.

Basic SEO Setup

While complete search engine optimization falls outside most web designers’ scope, some set up foundational elements during development. Think of it as building a house — your designer handles the structural basics, and SEO specialists can build upon that framework.

A standard technical setup often includes:

Clean URL structure

Mobile-friendly design

Fast page loading speeds

Proper heading hierarchy

Meta title/description setup

XML sitemap creation

Robots.txt configuration

Image optimization

Many clients expect comprehensive SEO from their web designer, but that’s a different specialty requiring ongoing work. Instead, you’re getting the technical building blocks — the essentials that make future optimization possible. Without these basics, even the best SEO strategy will struggle to deliver results.

Remember: your designer builds the launchpad, but reaching the stars requires dedicated SEO expertise.

Additional Costs Associated With Web Design

The sticker price isn’t the full story. These ongoing expenses often catch website owners off guard. Here’s what to budget for beyond the initial design costs:

Domains (€10-€50/year)

Domain names are your digital address, and prices vary dramatically based on your chosen extension. While traditional .com domains typically run €10-€15 annually, newer extensions like .io or .ai can cost up to €50 annually. Today’s naming conventions are more flexible than ever — prefixes like ‘get,’ ‘try,’ or ‘use’ and suffixes like ‘app’ or ‘hq’ paired with your brand name are perfectly acceptable alternatives when your ideal.com isn’t available.

Popular domain extensions and their typical costs:

.com, .net, .org: €10-€15/year

Country-specific (.ie, .co.uk): €15-€25/year

Tech-focused (.io, .ai, .app): €25-€50/year

Industry-specific (.store, .blog): €20-€30/year

Web Hosting (€100-€3,600/year)

Quality hosting directly impacts your website’s performance, security, and reliability. While shared hosting starts around €10/month, business-grade managed hosting typically ranges from €100-€300 monthly. Enterprise solutions can exceed €3,600 annually but deliver the performance to match.

Modern hosting needs go beyond simple storage space. Your hosting provider should offer robust security measures, including malware scanning, firewall protection, and automatic updates.

Performance features like SSD storage, server-level caching, and optimized PHP settings ensure your site loads quickly for visitors worldwide. Development tools such as staging environments and Git integration help manage updates safely, while automated backups protect your content.

SSL Certificates (€0-€200/year)

Thanks to Let’s Encrypt, Cloudflare and similar initiatives, basic SSL certificates are now freely available to everyone. Most modern hosting providers, automatically issue and renew these certificates at little or no extra cost. However, different business needs might require specialized SSL certificates.

Type

Est. costs /yr

Best For

Domain Validated (DV)

Free – €50

Basic websites, blogs

Organization Validated (OV)

€100 – €200

Business websites

Extended Validation (EV)

€200 – €700

Enterprise, eCommerce

Wildcard SSL

€200 – €1000

Multiple subdomains

Multi-Domain SSL

€300+

Multiple websites

For most new websites and small businesses, a standard Domain Validated SSL certificate (like the free ones from Let’s Encrypt) provides all the security you need. Consider upgrading to premium certificates only when your business handles sensitive data, operates in regulated industries, or needs specific liability coverage.

Remember, the padlock icon appears the same in browsers regardless of certificate type, so visitors won’t notice a difference in security indicators.

Maintenance Plans (€250-€1,000/year)

Website maintenance ensures your site stays secure, performs well, and remains up-to-date. While some agencies charge premium rates for maintenance packages, you can handle many tasks efficiently with the right tools.

A comprehensive maintenance plan should cover:

Security monitoring and hardening—Services like Solid Security (formerly iThemes Security) protect against threats in real time and strengthen your WordPress installation against common vulnerabilities. Their premium plans start at just €80/year, far less than traditional security services.

Regular backups—UpdraftPlus automatically stores complete website backups in your preferred cloud storage. Its premium version offers incremental backups and direct restore features, ensuring your data stays safe without the hefty price tag of managed backup services.

Performance optimization —Tools like EWWW Image Optimizer keep your media files lean and your pages loading fast. Combined with regular database cleanups and caching configuration, you’ll maintain competitive load times without expensive optimization services.

SEO monitoring and updates — Instead of paying monthly SEO maintenance fees, tools like Yoast SEO or Rank Math help monitor your search performance and maintain proper technical SEO. Their Pro version offers features that rival enterprise SEO tools at a fraction of the cost.

While these tasks can be managed in-house with the right tools (€250-€750 annually), many businesses opt for professional maintenance plans (€1,200-€12,000 annually) to focus on their core operations. This hands-off approach ensures your website stays healthy while your team concentrates on growing the business.

Choosing The Right Investment Level

Every business will need something different. A simple brochure site costs way less than a full-featured online store. Here’s how to match your budget with your actual needs — and how Divi saves money at every level:

Basic Business Sites (€1,000-€5,000)

A basic business website typically includes a homepage, about page, services section, contact page, and possibly a simple blog. At this price point, most agencies deliver template-based designs with minimal customization. You’ll get mobile responsiveness, basic SEO setup, and standard features like contact forms and social media integration.

Many providers charge extra for content writing or image sourcing, pushing costs toward the higher end. While these sites serve their purpose, businesses often find themselves restricted by limited update options and ongoing maintenance fees. Plus, adding new features or pages usually requires going back to the developer, creating unexpected costs down the road.

Advanced Business Sites (€5,000-€15,000)

At this tier, businesses expect sophisticated functionality and polished designs. Agency prices typically cover custom design work and advanced features like appointment booking systems, member portals, or resource libraries. Most packages include content strategy, professional copywriting, and extensive brand integration.

Projects often span 2-3 months, with significant time spent on user experience planning and custom feature development. While these sites deliver professional results, the costs add up quickly — especially when factoring in ongoing maintenance contracts and update fees. Many businesses pay premium rates for relatively standard features simply because they’re packaged as “custom development.”

Ecommerce Stores (€15,000+)

Online stores require significant investment when built through agencies. Standard pricing starts at €15,000 for basic shops and climbs rapidly with custom features. This covers product catalogue setup, payment gateway integration, shipping configurations, and basic inventory management.

Additional costs pile up for features like customer accounts, wish lists, or subscription systems. Most agencies require ongoing monthly maintenance contracts (€500-€1,500) to handle updates and security.

While these builds deliver professional results, businesses often overpay for standard ecommerce features that modern platforms handle efficiently.

Annual Operating Costs (€2,400-€24,000/year)

Traditional website maintenance through agencies comes with hefty annual costs. Basic packages start around €2,40 yearly, covering essential updates and security monitoring. Mid-tier plans (€600-1,200/year) add content updates, basic SEO, and performance optimization.

Enterprise-level support can exceed €2,400 annually, including dedicated support teams and regular feature development.

These costs often catch businesses off guard, especially when simple updates require service tickets. Many agencies structure their contracts to make clients dependent on their services, charging premium rates for routine tasks like content updates or plugin maintenance.

While professional maintenance has its place, most businesses overpay for basic upkeep that modern tools handle efficiently.

In today’s digital age, email remains a critical communication channel for businesses. But with the ever-growing threat of phishing scams, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for brands to ensure their emails land in inboxes and are recognised as legitimate. Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) is a new email specification that helps businesses address this challenge by enabling them to display their brand logos alongside authenticated emails.

What is BIMI?

BIMI stands for Brand Indicators for Message Identification. It’s an emerging standard that builds on existing email authentication protocols like SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. When a recipient’s email client supports BIMI and the sender has implemented BIMI correctly, the recipient will see the brand’s logo next to the email address in their inbox. This visual cue helps recipients easily identify legitimate emails from trusted senders and builds trust and brand recognition.

Why is BIMI Important?

BIMI offers several benefits for businesses:

Increased brand recognition: By displaying your logo next to your emails, BIMI helps recipients instantly recognise your brand and distinguish your emails from phishing attempts.

Improved inbox placement: Studies have shown that emails with logos are likelier to be opened and clicked on. This can lead to improved marketing campaign performance and customer engagement.

Reduced phishing attacks: Phishing emails often spoof a sender’s identity. BIMI makes it more difficult for phishers to impersonate your brand, protecting your customers and reputation.

How Does BIMI Work?

BIMI leverages existing email authentication protocols:

SPF (Sender Policy Framework): SPF verifies the authorised email servers for a domain.

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): DKIM cryptographically signs emails to ensure they haven’t been tampered with in transit.

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance): DMARC tells email receivers what to do with emails that fail SPF or DKIM authentication.

To implement BIMI, a business must have DMARC properly configured with a “p=none” policy (or a stricter policy). Then, a BIMI record is added to the domain’s DNS (Domain Name System) record. This record points to an SVG file containing the brand logo and specifies other BIMI parameters.

Here’s a simplified breakdown of the BIMI implementation process:

Set up SPF and DKIM: Ensure you have SPF and DKIM properly configured for your domain.

Implement DMARC: Implement DMARC with a “p=none” policy (or a stricter policy).

Create a BIMI logo: Design a logo following the BIMI logo specifications (see BIMI group website).

Host the logo: Host the logo on a publicly accessible web server.

Create a BIMI record: Create a BIMI record in your domain’s DNS record pointing to the hosted logo and specifying other BIMI parameters.

Benefits of BIMI Selectors as explained on the BIMI Group website:

BIMI selectors, a feature mentioned on the BIMI group website How and Why to Implement BIMI Selectors, allows a brand to use different logos for the same domain. This can be useful for organisations with multiple sub-brands or for situations where a different logo might be more appropriate for a specific type of email.

Common Mark Certificates (CMCs) – Making BIMI More Accessible

While BIMI offers significant advantages, it has traditionally relied on Verified Mark Certificates (VMCs) for logo verification. VMCs can be expensive and time-consuming to obtain, particularly for smaller businesses. This limited the reach of BIMI.

The BIMI group recently introduced Common Mark Certificates (CMCs) to address this challenge. CMCs are a more affordable and accessible alternative to VMCs. They are issued by authorised Certificate Authorities (CAs) and rely on a simpler validation process. Google’s support for CMCs has opened BIMI to a wider range of businesses, including smaller brands.

Your website’s header image is often the first thing visitors see. It sets the tone, evokes emotion, and should leave a lasting impression. But with the myriad of screen sizes available today, ensuring your image looks its best on every device can be a challenge. Let’s delve deeper into the intricacies of image ratios, responsive design, and how to optimise your visual content for maximum impact.

The Science Behind Image Ratios

As mentioned, image ratios are the cornerstone of responsive design. They determine the proportional relationship between an image’s width and height. For instance, a 16:9 ratio means the image is 16 units wide for every 9 units high.

Common Image Ratios and Their Applications

16:9

This widescreen format is ideal for desktop and laptop displays. Its popularity stems from its use in television and video formats and is very suitable for use in full screen header backgrounds. Here’s an example of how a square image would be displayed in a 16:9 ratio, with the shaded parts not being visible.

9:16

This vertical orientation is perfect for mobile devices. It ensures images fill the screen without excessive cropping. Again the image below shows how a square image would be cropped to fit a phone screen, with the shaded parts being hidden.

2:1

A versatile ratio that works well for half-screen headers on desktop and larger tablets. It provides a good balance between width and height while still allowing other content on the page to be visible to the user (unlike a full screen header). The challenge with this is a smaller height is visible, which results in the need to concentrate the image content closer to the centre, with less height to show the image. Once more, the image below shows how much of a square image will be lost when using a header that is 50% of the screen height.

The takeaway from this is that while these are common ratios, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. The optimal ratio depends on the specific design and content of your website and the greatest consideration must be what the image will look like when it’s used in each screen size. Does the cropping affect the “story” of the image to a point where it looses context (think of heads being “cut off”) or are multiple images required to ensure a suitable fit on all devices.

Beyond the Basics: Custom Ratios

In some cases, you may need a custom image ratio. For example, if your logo or key visual elements are located in specific areas of the image, you might need a ratio that preserves these elements across different screen sizes. Some forethought and planning can help you determine the best custom ratio for your needs.

The Role of Responsive Design

Responsive design is the magic behind your website’s ability to adapt to different screen sizes. It involves using flexible grids, fluid images, and CSS media queries to create a seamless user experience.

How Responsive Design Affects Images

While responsive design is a boon for overall website usability, it can pose challenges for images, especially in header sections. As the screen size shrinks, the image may be resized, cropped, or stretched to fit the available space. This can distort the image, hide important elements, or simply diminish its visual impact.

The Importance of Focal Points

To mitigate these issues, it’s crucial to identify the focal point of your image. This is the area that you want viewers to focus on. Ideally, the focal point should be positioned near the centre of the image. This way, even if the image is cropped, the essential elements will likely remain visible.

Video Backgrounds: A Dynamic Challenge

Video backgrounds can add a dynamic and engaging element to your website. However, they present unique challenges in terms of responsiveness.

Key Considerations for Video Backgrounds

Video Format: Ensure your video is optimised for different screen sizes and devices.

Video Content: Position the main subject or action near the centre of the frame to minimize cropping issues.

Video Player Controls: Consider how video player controls will appear on different screen sizes and how they might interact with the overall design.

Performance: Optimize video files for fast loading times to enhance user experience.

Additional Tips for Image and Video Optimization

Image Compression: Reduce image file sizes without compromising quality to improve loading times.

Image Formats: Choose the appropriate image format (JPEG, PNG, SVG) based on the image content and desired quality.

Alt Text: Provide descriptive alt text for images to improve accessibility and SEO.

Lazy Loading: Implement lazy loading to defer image loading until they are about to be visible on the screen.

Video Quality: Offer multiple video formats and resolutions to cater to different devices and network conditions.

In today’s digital landscape, a website is no longer a luxury for businesses – it’s a necessity. But a website that merely exists won’t cut it. To truly stand out and forge connections with your customers, you need to weave your brand story into the very fabric of your online presence. This is where WordPress shines. As a user-friendly and versatile platform, WordPress empowers you to create a website that not only looks professional but also pulsates with the unique narrative of your brand.

This is why over 43% of websites globally use WordPress (W3 Techs – May 2024).

Why Storytelling is the Secret Sauce

Humans are wired to connect with stories. They resonate with us on a deeper level, leaving lasting impressions and fostering trust. When applied to your website, storytelling can be a potent tool to achieve several objectives:

Brand Awareness: Share your company’s origin story, core values, and the driving force behind your mission. This sheds light on what your brand represents and why it matters to potential customers.

Emotional Resonance: Stories have the power to tap into human emotions, fostering a deeper connection with your brand. By igniting emotions, you create a more memorable experience for visitors, making them more likely to remember you.

Enhanced Engagement: Compelling stories are inherently captivating. They keep visitors glued to their screens, eager to learn more about your products or services.

Building Trust and Credibility: By sharing your story, you become more relatable and trustworthy to potential customers. Transparency fosters trust, and trust paves the way for long-term customer relationships.

WordPress Websites: Your Storytelling Toolkit

WordPress offers a treasure trove of features that make incorporating storytelling into your website a breeze:

Blog: A blog is a dynamic platform for sharing ongoing stories, industry insights, and updates that resonate with your target audience.

About Us Page: This is your golden opportunity to tell the story behind your brand. Craft a compelling narrative that details your company’s history, mission statement, and the passionate individuals who make it all happen.

Visually Captivating Content: WordPress allows you to effortlessly create visually appealing content with a blend of images, videos, and infographics to elevate your storytelling.

Testimonials: Social proof is a powerful tool. Showcase real customer stories and positive reviews to build trust and establish credibility.

Bringing Your Story to Life with a WordPress Website

Here are some creative ways you can leverage storytelling on your WordPress website:

Share your company’s journey: Take visitors on a captivating tour of your company’s evolution, from the spark of an idea to your current success story.

Highlight customer experiences: Feature stories of how your products or services have made a positive impact on your customers’ lives. Let your customers be your brand ambassadors by showcasing their success stories.

Offer a glimpse behind the scenes: Give visitors a sneak peek into your company culture, team, and work environment. This fosters a sense of connection and authenticity.

Infuse your content with quotes and success stories: Share positive testimonials and quotes from satisfied customers. Social proof builds trust and positions you as a reliable brand.

By weaving storytelling elements into the tapestry of your WordPress website, you can create a more engaging and memorable experience for your visitors. This, in turn, can lead to increased brand loyalty, customer trust, and ultimately, business growth.

Visual Storytelling: The Perfect Marriage of Words and Images

To further amplify the impact of your storytelling, consider incorporating these visuals from Pixabay.com or Unsplash.com:

A photo brimming with emotion: A close-up image of two people laughing and conversing exemplifies an emotional connection.

A diverse team working together: An image depicting a team from diverse backgrounds working collaboratively represents your company culture.

Someone engrossed in a blog post: A stock photo of a person reading a blog post on a laptop visually portrays content consumption.

A company timeline infographic: A creative infographic showcasing your company’s timeline can effectively illustrate your brand journey.

A customer testimonial quote: An image featuring a customer testimonial quote visually represents trust and credibility.

By strategically incorporating these storytelling elements and visuals, you can transform your WordPress website into a powerful tool for connecting with your customers and achieving your business goals and we can help you to achieve this. Please get in touch to see how we can work together.

Imagine you’ve opened a fantastic new store, filled with amazing products. But there’s one problem: no one knows it exists. That’s the situation many businesses face online. They have a great website, but it’s hidden deep within the vast digital wilderness, unseen by potential customers. Here’s where SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, comes in. It’s like putting up neon signs and building a welcoming entrance for your online store, attracting potential customers searching for what you offer. But with the ever-changing world of the internet, is SEO still relevant in 2024? Absolutely! In fact, it’s more crucial than ever.

Why is SEO so important?

Think of Google, Bing, and other search engines as librarians in a giant digital library. Their job is to help people find the information they need. SEO helps you tell these “librarians” what your website is about and why it’s relevant to specific searches. The better you communicate, the higher your website ranks in the search results, making it more visible to potential customers.

Benefits of good SEO in 2024:

Increased website traffic: More people finding your website means more potential customers. It’s like having a constant flow of visitors to your online store.

Improved brand awareness: Higher rankings make your brand more visible, leading to increased recognition and trust. It’s like having your store name appear on prominent billboards in the city.

Cost-effective marketing: Compared to paid advertising, SEO offers a long-term, sustainable way to attract organic traffic, saving you money in the long run. It’s like having a loyal customer base who keeps coming back for more.

Qualified leads: SEO helps attract visitors genuinely interested in what you offer, leading to better conversion rates (turning visitors into customers). It’s like attracting customers who specifically need the products you sell.

What’s new in 2024?

While the core principles of SEO remain the same, search engines are constantly evolving, and neglecting the latest trends can leave you behind. Here’s what’s new in the world of SEO:

Focus on user experience: Search engines prioritise websites that offer a positive user experience, meaning fast loading times, mobile-friendliness, and clear navigation. It’s like making sure your store is easy to find, walk around in, and has helpful staff.

Content is still king: High-quality, informative content that answers users’ questions remains crucial for good SEO. Think of it as offering valuable resources to your customers, making them want to visit your store again and again.

The rise of voice search: With the increasing popularity of voice assistants like Alexa and Siri, optimising your website for voice search queries is becoming essential. It’s like ensuring your store signage can be understood by someone asking for directions.

Evolving search intent: Search engines are getting smarter, focusing on understanding the intent behind searches rather than just keywords. This means your content needs to cater to the user’s specific needs and questions, not just keyword stuffing. It’s like having knowledgeable salespeople who can understand what customers are truly looking for.

Getting started:

If you’re new to SEO, don’t worry! There are many resources available to help you get started. Here are some simple steps:

Identify relevant keywords: Research words and phrases people use to search for products or services like yours.

Optimise your website content: Use your chosen keywords naturally throughout your website content, but avoid keyword stuffing.

Build high-quality backlinks: Backlinks are links from other websites to yours, acting like recommendations from trusted sources.

Focus on user experience: Ensure your website is mobile-friendly, loads quickly, and is easy to navigate.

Stay updated on the latest trends: Keep yourself informed about the latest SEO developments to stay ahead of the curve.

Remember, SEO is a long-term strategy, and results don’t happen overnight. However, by implementing these steps and staying consistent, you can unlock the power of SEO and watch your website climb the search engine ladder, attracting more visitors, boosting your brand, and ultimately, achieving your business goals.

Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need expert guidance and support in navigating the ever-changing world of search engine optimisation.

Full Site Editing (FSE) is a new way to edit your WordPress site that gives you more control over the design and layout of your site. With FSE, you can use blocks to design every part of your site, from your header and footer to your content pages and blog posts.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the way we interact with the world around us, and the web is no exception. AI is already being used to improve website usability, security, and personalisation, and its impact is only going to grow in the years to come. So, how do we prepare our websites for use with AI

Here are a few ways that AI is likely to affect website usage in the future:

AI-powered chatbots will become more common. Chatbots are computer programs that can simulate conversation with human users. They are already being used on many websites to provide customer service, answer questions, and make recommendations. In the future, AI-powered chatbots are likely to become even more sophisticated, capable of handling even more complex tasks and providing a more personalized experience for users.

AI will be used to personalize website content. AI can be used to track user behaviour and preferences, and then use this information to personalize the content that users see on a website. This could include anything from recommending products to displaying targeted ads. Personalized content is more likely to engage users and keep them coming back to a website.

AI will be used to improve website security. AI can be used to identify and prevent security threats to websites. For example, AI can be used to scan website code for vulnerabilities, or to detect malicious activity in real time. Improved website security will make users feel more confident about using the web, and could lead to increased website traffic.

How to Prepare Your Website for the Expansion of AI

If you want your website to be successful in the future, it’s important to start preparing for the expansion of AI. Here are a few things you can do:

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual pages and blog posts, as well as your category and tag archives. They are important for a number of reasons, including:

They help users find your content. When someone searches for a specific keyword or phrase, your permalinks can help your content show up in search results.

They help search engines index your content. Search engines use permalinks to understand the structure of your website and to index your content.

They make it easy for you to share your content. When you share a link to your content on social media or in an email, the permalink will be used.

Permalinks are an important part of any WordPress website. They help users find your content, they help search engines index your content, and they make it easy for you to share your content. By using the right permalink structure, you can improve the SEO of your website and make it easier for people to find your content.

Permalink structure in WordPress

The default permalink structure in WordPress is “Day and name.” This means that the permalink for a blog post would look something like this:

https://www.example.com/2023/06/23/my-first-blog-post/

This structure is not very SEO-friendly, as it does not include the title of the blog post in the permalink. A better option would be to use the “Post name” permalink structure. This would mean that the permalink for the same blog post would look like this:

https://www.example.com/my-first-blog-post/

This structure is more SEO-friendly because it includes the title of the blog post in the permalink. This makes it easier for search engines to index your content and to understand what your content is about.

Another option is to use the “Custom structure” permalink option. This allows you to create your own permalink structure. For example, you could use a structure that includes the category of the blog post in the permalink. This would make it even easier for users and search engines to find your content.

The best permalink option for SEO

The best option for SEO is to use the “Post name” permalink structure. This structure is simple, easy to remember, and easy for search engines to index. It is also the most common permalink structure used by WordPress websites.

However, if you have a large website with a lot of content, you may want to consider using the “Custom structure” permalink option. This allows you to create a more complex permalink structure that can help you organize your content and make it easier for users and search engines to find.

Additional tips for optimizing your permalinks for SEO

Use short, descriptive permalinks. The shorter and more descriptive your permalinks are, the easier they will be for users and search engines to understand.

Use keywords in your permalinks. When possible, use keywords in your permalinks that are relevant to your content. This will help your content show up in search results for those keywords.

Avoid using special characters in your permalinks. Special characters, such as spaces, underscores, and dashes, can cause problems with some search engines. It is best to avoid using these characters in your permalinks.

By following these tips, you can optimize your permalinks for SEO and improve the visibility of your content in search results.

Is Perplexity AI the future of internet searching? As a concept, it’s similar to ChatGPT and Google combined. However, unlike Google, Perplexity Ask provides citations for the search results, which is a valuable tool for verifying the accuracy of the information provided. Perplexity.ai has introduced a new conversational search engine designed to provide information through a chatbot-style interface and large language model (LLM) similar to how OpenAI’s ChatGPT works. The difference is that Perplexity uses current information, including footnotes with links to the sources of the data. In summary, Perplexity Ask is a conversational search engine that provides direct answers with citations and incorporates follow-up questions and related searches. It is designed to verify the accuracy of the information provided and help ensure that users are not misled by incorrect or biased information.

Compared to traditional search engines like Google, Perplexity Ask provides citations for the search results, which is a valuable tool for verifying the accuracy of the information provided.

The History of Perplexity;

Perplexity AI is a company that develops an AI-based search engine platform. The company was founded in August 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski. Srinivas previously worked on language and diffusion generative models at OpenAI, Yarats had been an AI research scientist at Facebook AI Research, and Konwinski is a cofounder of DataBricks. The company’s flagship product is Perplexity Ask, a search engine that delivers answers to complex questions using large language models. It is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 models and Microsoft’s Bing search.
Unlike a typical search engine, Perplexity offers a chatbot-like interface that allows users to ask questions in natural language, to which its AI responds by citing sites and sources from around the web. Users can ask follow-up questions to dive deeper into a particular topic and Perplexity will summarize the results to provide a direct answer. In February 2023, Perplexity released a Chrome extension for Perplexity Ask. The company also offers Bird SQL, a search interface for Twitter that translates natural language into SQL code. In March 2023, Perplexity launched an iOS app that introduced features like user sign-in for personalization, persistent search history, and social sharing. The company has received $26 million in funding in a Series A round led by NEA.

Setting Itself Apart;

Perplexity AI sets itself apart from other AI-powered search engines in several ways:

Conversational-style search:
Unlike traditional search engines, Perplexity offers a chatbot-like interface that allows users to ask questions in natural language, to which its AI responds by citing sites and sources from around the web. Users can ask follow-up questions to dive deeper into a particular topic and Perplexity will summarize the results to provide a direct answer.

Personalization:
Perplexity offers personalized recommendations, automated query expansion, and natural language understanding.

Accuracy:
Perplexity is able to generate search results with a much higher rate of accuracy than traditional search engines, allowing users to get the most accurate and relevant results.

Social aspect:
Perplexity has introduced features that add a Wikipedia-style social aspect to search, a direction toward which Perplexity hopes to push toward in the future.

Fully cited answers:
Perplexity provides concise, fully cited answers in real-time.

iOS app:
Perplexity has released an iOS app that introduces features like user sign-in for personalization, persistent search history, and social sharing.

Better than traditional Search Engines?

Furthermore, unlike traditional search engines that answer queries by serving links, Perplexity Ask summarizes the results to provide a direct answer and provides citations that enable the information to be verified. Perplexity Ask also incorporates follow-up questions and related searches to help users find what they want. Each follow-up question creates a new search query and in the process, facilitates a conversational search experience. Perplexity Ask is designed to verify the accuracy of the information provided and help ensure that users are not misled by incorrect or biased information.

In summary, Perplexity can be used to evaluate language models and predict uniformly among the set of specified tokens in a corpus. It can also be used in text classification to choose the label with minimum perplexity. However, it is not always accurate as a measure of how hard a prediction problem is.

While it’s great for getting answers, it’s not yet able to build you a website and that’s where we can help. If you’re looking for a new website, a refresh for your existing one or if you’ve run into trouble, contact us and we’ll get you the answers you need.

With users having access to many platforms on the internet, the need to be engaging has never been so important for websites and to meet this challenge, website design trends for 2023 will be focusing more and more on creating engaging, relevant, and accessible experiences for users. Some of the design trends for 2023 include motion design, minimalism, authenticity, personalization, and accessibility to achieve these goals. Let’s take a brief look at what’s involved in each of these design trends…

Motion design:

Motion design is the use of animation and movement to create a more engaging and visually appealing experience for users. It can be used to draw attention to important elements, create a sense of movement and excitement, and make websites more interactive. This trend is being driven by the increasing availability of high-speed internet, which allows for smoother and more fluid animations. Here are some of the benefits of using motion in your website design:

Increased engagement: Motion design can help to capture and hold users’ attention, which can lead to increased engagement with the website.

Improved understanding: Motion design can help to improve users’ understanding of the content on the website by making it more visually appealing and easier to follow.

Enhanced branding: Motion design can help to enhance a website’s branding by creating a more memorable and unique experience for users.

Increased conversions: Motion design can help to increase conversions by making it easier for users to take desired actions, such as signing up for a newsletter or making a purchase.

Of course, there are also some challenges to using motion design in websites. One challenge is that it can be difficult to create motion design that is both effective and aesthetically pleasing. Another challenge is that motion design can be expensive and time-consuming to create. Overall, the benefits of using motion design in websites outweigh the challenges. If you are looking to create a website that is more engaging, informative, and memorable, then motion design is a great option.

Here are some tips for using motion design in websites:

Try to use motion sparingly: Too much motion can be overwhelming and distracting, so it is important to use motion sparingly

Use motion to highlight important elements: Motion can be used to highlight important elements on a website, such as call-to-action buttons or product images

Use motion to guide users through the website: Motion can be used to guide users through the website by creating a clear and logical flow

Using motion to create a sense of excitement: Motion can be used to create a sense of excitement and energy on a website

Use motion to tell a story: Motion can be used to tell a story on a website, which can help to engage users and keep them coming back for more

Some examples of motion design in web design include:

Animated logos and icons

Parallax scrolling

Animated illustrations

Animated transitions between pages

Minimalism:

Minimalism is a design style that is characterised by its use of simple, clean lines and a limited number of elements. There are many benefits to using minimalism in web design.

First, it can help to improve the user experience. When there are fewer elements on a page, it is easier for users to scan the content and find what they are looking for. This can lead to faster page load times, improved SEO, and increased conversions. Second, minimalism can help to create a more aesthetically pleasing website. When there is less clutter on a page, the website design is more likely to be visually appealing to users. This can help to improve the overall branding and reputation of a website. Third, minimalism can help to improve the performance of a website.

When there are fewer elements on a page, the website will load faster and use less resources. This can lead to a better user experience and improved SEO.

Of course, there are also some challenges to using minimalism in web design. One challenge is that it can be difficult to create a minimalist design that is still visually appealing and engaging. Another challenge is that minimalism can be limiting in terms of the amount of content that can be displayed on a page. Overall, the benefits of using minimalism as a website design trend outweigh the challenges. If you are looking to create a user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing, and high-performing website, then minimalism is a great option.

Minimalist designs can be very effective at creating a sense of calm and focus, which can be helpful for users who are bombarded with information on a daily basis. Some examples of minimalism in web design include:

Use simple fonts and colours

Create a lot of white space

Limit the number of navigation options

Focus on one main message per page

Use large, high-quality images

Use negative space to create visual interest

Be consistent with your design elements

Test your design with users to get feedback

Authenticity:

Authenticity design is a design approach that focuses on creating websites that are genuine and true to the brand or organisation they represent. Authenticity design can be a powerful tool for building trust with users and creating a more engaging website experience. By following these tips, you can create a website that is both authentic and effective;

Realistic imagery: Using high-quality, realistic imagery can help to create a sense of authenticity on a website. This can be especially important for websites that sell products or services, as it can help users to visualize what they are buying.

Personal stories: Sharing personal stories can help to make a website more relatable and authentic. This can be done through blog posts, testimonials, or other forms of content.

A clear and concise voice: The voice of a website should be clear and concise, and it should reflect the brand or organisation it represents. This can be done by using consistent language and tone throughout the website.

Authenticity is key to building trust with users. When users feel like they can trust a website, they are more likely to engage with its content and take desired actions, such as making a purchase or signing up for a newsletter.

Use real people in your imagery. This could be your employees, customers, or even just people you find on the street.

Tell stories about your products or services. This could be how they were created, how they are used, or even just a funny anecdote about them.

Be transparent about your business practices. Let people know where you are located, who you are owned by, and how you make money.

Be responsive to feedback. If people have questions or concerns, be sure to address them promptly and honestly.

Personalisation:

Personalisation is the customisation of a website’s content, layout, or features to the individual needs and interests of a user. It can be used to improve the user experience, increase engagement, and boost conversions.

There are many ways to personalize a website. Some common methods include:

Using cookies and other tracking technologies to collect data about users’ browsing behaviour. This data can then be used to personalize the content that users see, such as recommending products or services that they are likely to be interested in.

Asking users for their preferences when they first visit the website. This information can then be used to personalize the website’s content, layout, and features.

Using artificial intelligence (AI) to personalize the website’s content and features in real time. This allows the website to adapt to the user’s changing needs and interests.

Personalization can be a powerful tool for improving the user experience. When users feel that a website is tailored to their individual needs, they are more likely to engage with the content and take desired actions, such as making a purchase or signing up for a newsletter.

In addition to improving the user experience, personalisation can also help to increase engagement and boost conversions. For example, a study by Forrester Research found that personalised emails have a 20% higher open rate and a 10% higher click-through rate than non-personalised emails.

Overall, personalisation is a valuable tool for website owners who want to improve the user experience, increase engagement, and boost conversions. By using personalisation techniques, website owners can create a more relevant and engaging experience for their users, which can lead to improved business outcomes.

Accessibility:

Accessibility design is the practice of designing websites and other digital content so that they can be used by people with disabilities. This includes people with visual impairments, hearing impairments, mobility impairments, and cognitive impairments. There are many benefits to designing websites with accessibility in mind. First, it can make your website more accessible to a wider range of people. This can lead to increased traffic, engagement, and sales. Second, it can help to improve your website’s search engine ranking. Third, it can help to protect your website from legal liability.

There are a number of things you can do to make your website more accessible. Some of the most important things include:

Using high-contrast colours and fonts

Providing alternative text for images and other non-text content

Making sure your website is keyboard-navigable

Providing transcripts for audio and video content

Making sure your website is compatible with screen readers and other assistive technologies

There are a number of resources available to help you make your website more accessible. The Wave website is a great resource for information and resources on web accessibility. The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) also provides a number of accessibility guidelines and tools that can help you make your website more accessible.

By following these tips, you can make your website more accessible to people with disabilities. This can help to improve the user experience for everyone, and it can also help to protect your website from legal liability.

These are just a few examples of the top web design trends for 2023. By keeping up with these trends, businesses can create websites that are more engaging, relevant, and accessible to users.

choosing the best image format for your website is an important component of web design. Images can add visual appeal to your website and help to communicate your message effectively to your audience. However, it is important to choose the right type of image for your website, as different image types have their own pros and cons. In this article, we will outline the different types of images commonly used in websites, along with their advantages and disadvantages of the various formats.

1. JPEG

Firstly, JPEG is one of the most common image formats used in websites. It is a compressed image format that is designed to reduce the size of images without sacrificing too much quality. JPEG images are ideal for photographs and images with a lot of detail.

Pros: JPEG images are easy to compress and therefore ideal for web use. They have a good balance between image quality and file size, making them an efficient choice for website designers.

Cons: If JPEG images are compressed too much, they can lose quality and become blurry. Additionally, they are not ideal for images with transparent backgrounds, as they do not support transparency.

2. PNG

The PNG format is another popular image used in websites. These images are uncompressed, which means they retain their quality and are ideal for images with transparent backgrounds.

Pros: PNG images support transparency, making them ideal for logos and other images with transparent backgrounds. They also retain their quality, even when compressed, making them ideal for web use.

Cons: PNG images tend to be larger in size than other image formats, which can impact the loading speed of your website.

3. GIF

GIFs are a popular image format used for animated images, such as banners or logos that move.

Pros: GIF images support animation, which can add visual interest to your website. They are also small in size, making them ideal for web use.

Cons: GIF images are limited in colour and resolution, which can impact their quality. They are also not suitable for images with a lot of detail.

4. SVG

SVG is a vector-based image format that is ideal for icons and logos. It is a scalable image format, which means that it can be resized without losing quality.

Pros: As they are code-based SVG images are scalable, which makes them ideal for logos and icons that need to be displayed at different sizes. They are also small in size, making them ideal for web use.

Cons: SVG images are not ideal for photographs or images with a lot of detail. They are also not supported by all web browsers.

5. WebP

WebP is a relatively new image format that was created by Google. It is a compressed image format that is designed to be small in size without sacrificing quality.

Pros: These images are small in size, which makes them ideal for web use. They also retain their quality, even when compressed.

Cons: WebP images are not supported by all web browsers, which can impact their usability.

Responsive website design refers to the design and development of websites that can adapt to different screen sizes and devices. With the increasing use of mobile devices to access the internet, it is essential for websites to be responsive to ensure that they are accessible and user-friendly across a wide range of devices and using the Divi Theme for responsive design can help to achieve this.

One of the most popular tools for creating responsive websites is WordPress, which is a content management system (CMS) that allows you to easily create and manage a website. There are many WordPress themes available that are designed to be responsive, and one of the most popular is the Divi theme from Elegant Themes. Divi is a versatile theme that comes with a visual page builder that allows you to create custom layouts and designs without the need for coding. It is also highly customizable, with a range of pre-designed templates and modules that you can use to create a unique website that meets your needs.
So, how does Divi theme make a website responsive? Let’s take a closer look.

Responsive Design with Divi

One of the key features of Divi is its responsive design options. When you create a new page or post with Divi, you can choose from a range of layout options that are designed to be responsive. This means that your website will automatically adapt to different screen sizes and devices, without the need for additional coding or customization. For example, you can choose to use a full-width layout, which will stretch the content of your page or post to fill the entire width of the screen. Alternatively, you can choose a custom layout with a fixed width, which will keep the content within a set width and allow for more control over the design.
Divi also includes a range of responsive design settings that allow you to customize how your website appears on different devices. For example, you can set different font sizes and styles for mobile and desktop users, or hide certain content on smaller screens to improve the user experience.

Customizing Your Website with Divi

Another advantage of Divi is its customization options. You can use the visual page builder to create custom layouts and designs, or choose from a range of pre-designed templates and modules.
For example, you can use the Divi library to save and reuse custom layouts and modules, making it easy to create a consistent design across your website. You can also use the global settings to customize the appearance of your website, including colours, fonts, and other design elements. Divi also includes a range of modules that you can use to add custom functionality to your website. For example, you can use the contact form module to create a custom contact form, or the social media follow module to add social media icons to your website.

Optimizing Your Website with Divi

In addition to its responsive design and customization options, Divi also includes a range of features that can help you optimize your website for speed and performance. For example, Divi includes a built-in caching system that can help to improve the loading speed of your website. It also includes a range of optimization settings that can help to reduce the size of your website’s files and improve its performance.

Divi also includes a range of SEO settings that can help to improve your website’s visibility in search engines. For example, you can customize the meta tags and descriptions for each page and post on your website, or use the built-in social media integration to optimize your website for social sharing.

Conclusion

In conclusion, responsive website design is an essential component of modern website development. With the increasing use of mobile devices to access the internet, it is essential for websites to be accessible and user-friendly across a wide range of devices.

Divi theme is a powerful tool for creating responsive websites with WordPress. Its visual page builder and customization options allow you to create custom layouts and designs without the need for coding, while its optimization features can help to improve the speed and performance of your website.

Overall, if you are looking to create a responsive website with WordPress, Divi theme is an excellent choice. Its range of features and customization options make it easy to create a unique website that meets your needs, while ensuring that it is accessible and user-friendly across a wide range of devices. So, if you’re looking for a new responsive website, or already use Divi and need some help feel free to get in touch.

WordPress Gutenberg is a powerful new editor that has been integrated into WordPress to help make the process of creating content on your website easier and more intuitive. Named after the inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg, this new editor is designed to revolutionize the way we create and publish content online.

One of the key features of WordPress Gutenberg is the introduction of blocks. Blocks are individual units of content that can be easily arranged and customized to create stunning pages and posts. Whether you’re looking to add text, images, videos, or any other type of content, blocks provide a flexible and user-friendly way to do so. With the ability to drag and drop blocks into place, you can create beautiful layouts without needing any coding knowledge.

In addition to its block-based design, WordPress Gutenberg also offers a variety of new features that help streamline the content creation process. For example, the new editor includes inline formatting options, which make it easy to adjust font styles and other design elements directly within the text block. This means that you can quickly make changes to your content without having to navigate through multiple menus or settings.

Another key feature of WordPress Gutenberg is the ability to create reusable blocks. This means that you can save commonly used content elements, such as a header or a call-to-action button, as a block that can be quickly inserted into any page or post. Not only does this save time, but it also ensures consistency across your website.

WordPress Gutenberg also includes a number of other features designed to make content creation easier and more intuitive. For example, the editor includes a block directory, which allows you to browse and install new blocks directly within the editor. This means that you can easily find and add new features to your website without having to leave the editing interface.

Overall, WordPress Gutenberg represents a major step forward in the world of content creation. By providing a flexible, block-based editing experience that is easy to use and highly customizable, it has made it easier than ever to create beautiful, engaging content for your website. Whether you’re a blogger, marketer, or business owner, WordPress Gutenberg has something to offer, and it’s definitely worth exploring for yourself.

The pros and cons for Classic WordPress and WordPress Gutenberg:

Classic WordPress:

Pros:

Familiar interface: For users who have been using WordPress for a long time, the classic editor is a familiar and comfortable interface.

Simple and lightweight: The classic editor is simple and lightweight, which can be a pro for users who don’t need advanced features and prefer a basic writing experience.

Wide range of plugins: Since the classic editor has been around for a long time, there is a wide range of plugins available to add new features and functionality.

Cons:

Limited customization: The classic editor is limited in terms of customization options and users need to have some coding knowledge to make changes to the appearance of their content.

Difficult to create complex layouts: Creating complex layouts with the classic editor can be time-consuming and frustrating.

No visual representation of content: Since the classic editor doesn’t provide a visual representation of the content being created, it can be difficult to know how the content will look once published.

WordPress Gutenberg:

Pros:

Block-based editing: Gutenberg uses a block-based editing system, which makes it easy to create complex layouts and add a wide range of content types.

Visual representation of content: The block-based editing system provides a visual representation of the content being created, making it easy to see how the content will look once published.

Simplified formatting: The inline formatting options make it easy to adjust font styles and other design elements directly within the text block.

Cons:

Learning curve: Gutenberg has a steeper learning curve than the classic editor, especially for users who are not familiar with block-based editing.

Limited plugin compatibility: Since Gutenberg is a relatively new editor, some plugins may not be compatible with it yet.

Performance issues: Gutenberg can slow down the website’s performance, especially if there are many blocks being used on a single page or post.

It is important to keep your site updated in order to ensure that it is secure, stable, and running efficiently. In addition, updating your site also gives you access to new features and improvements. Updating a WordPress site is a relatively simple process that can be done in only 5 steps to backup your site, update the WordPress core, update any installed plugins and themes, check for compatibility and finally test your site.

1. Backup your site

Before updating your site, it is important to backup all of your content, including images, posts, and pages. This will ensure that you can restore your site to its previous state in case something goes wrong during the update process.

2. Update WordPress core

The first step in updating your site is to update the WordPress core. This can be done by going to the Updates section in the WordPress dashboard. Click on the Update Now button to begin the process. It is important to ensure that you have the latest version of WordPress installed.

3. Update plugins and themes

After updating the WordPress core, it is important to update any plugins and themes that are installed on your site. These updates may contain important security patches and bug fixes. You can update your plugins and themes by going to the Plugins and Themes sections in the WordPress dashboard, respectively.

4. Check for compatibility

Before updating your plugins and themes, it is important to check for compatibility with the new version of WordPress. Some plugins and themes may not be compatible with the latest version, which can cause issues with your site. You can check for compatibility by visiting the plugin or theme’s website or by looking at the plugin or theme’s documentation.

5. Test your site

After updating your site, it is important to test it to ensure that everything is working properly. This includes checking that all of your content is still visible, that all of your links are still working, and that your site is still responsive.

As part of Maintenance & Care packages, we can take care of this for you, while also making sure that you have backups and security measures in place. If you chat about this please reach out.

Divi and Elementor are both popular page builder plugins for WordPress that allow users to create custom designs for their websites without needing to write any code.

Here are some key highlights for each one:

Divi:

Developed by Elegant Themes

Offers a drag-and-drop visual editor for designing page layouts

Features a wide range of pre-designed layouts and modules that can be customised

Integrates with the Divi theme, which can be customised in the same interface

Includes split testing and conversion optimisation tools

Elementor:

Developed by Elementor LLC

Offers a drag-and-drop visual editor for designing page layouts

Features a wide range of pre-designed templates and widgets that can be customised

Integrates with any WordPress theme

Includes marketing and conversion optimisation tools

When it comes to the nuts and bolts of using either page builder, here are some of the point to keep in mind:

Design interface:

Divi uses a “drag and drop” interface, where users can add and rearrange elements by clicking and dragging them on the page. Elementor, on the other hand, uses a “block” system, where users can add and edit pre-designed sections and elements by clicking on them.

Pre-designed templates and blocks:

Both Divi and Elementor offer a wide selection of pre-designed templates and blocks that users can customise to create their own designs. However, Divi’s library is generally larger and more diverse, offering more options for different types of websites.

Customisability:

Both Divi and Elementor offer a wide range of customisation options, but Divi is generally considered to be more flexible and feature-rich. It allows users to make more detailed and granular changes to their designs, including things like custom CSS and JavaScript.

Performance:

Both Divi and Elementor are optimised for performance, but Divi has a reputation for being slightly slower and heavier on server resources. This can be an issue for sites with a lot of traffic or for users on shared hosting plans.

Price:

Divi is a premium plugin that requires a one-time purchase or a yearly subscription. Elementor is available in both a free and a premium version, with the premium version offering additional features and templates.

Overall, both Divi and Elementor are powerful and user-friendly page builders that offer a wide range of customisation options. But they have some key differences in terms of the specific features they offer and how they integrate with WordPress themes. Both plugins have a large user base and are well-regarded by the WordPress community.

It’s difficult to say definitively what the “best” WordPress page builder is, as the ideal choice will depend on your specific needs and preferences. Ultimately, the best choice for you will depend on your needs and budget, as well as your comfort level with WordPress and web development in general.

A standard website is a type of website that is typically used to provide information or promote a company, organization, or individual. It may include pages with text, images, and other media, and may have features such as a contact form or a blog. A standard website is usually not designed for selling products or services online.

On the other hand, e-commerce websites are online platforms that allow businesses to sell products or services to customers over the internet. They are a convenient and cost-effective way for businesses to reach a global audience and generate revenue.

There are many benefits to setting up an e-commerce website, including the ability to reach a wider audience, the ability to operate a business 24/7, and the ability to track and analyse customer data. E-commerce websites also allow businesses to expand their product offerings, as they are not limited by physical space or the need to stock inventory.

To set up an e-commerce website, businesses will typically need to purchase a domain name and hosting plan, install an e-commerce platform such as WooCommerce or Shopify, and design and customize their website. They will also need to set up payment gateways, shipping options, and tax rates.

Once an e-commerce website is set up, businesses can start adding products and managing their inventory. This may include adding product descriptions, images, and pricing, as well as setting up discounts and promotions. Businesses will also need to manage orders, process payments, and handle customer inquiries and complaints.

E-commerce websites also need to be optimized for search engines in order to attract traffic and potential customers. This may include implementing search engine optimization (SEO) techniques, such as keyword research and on-page optimization, as well as building high-quality backlinks.

In addition to SEO, businesses may also want to consider other marketing strategies to promote their e-commerce website and attract customers. This may include email marketing, social media marketing, and paid advertising on platforms such as Google Ads or Facebook Ads.

E-commerce websites also need to be secure in order to protect both the business and its customers. This may include implementing security measures such as SSL certificates and secure payment gateways, as well as following best practices for data privacy and cybersecurity.

Here are some key differences between standard websites and e-commerce websites:

Purpose: A standard website is usually used to provide information or promote a company, while an e-commerce website is used to sell products or services online.

Features: Standard websites may have a variety of features, such as a contact form or a blog, but do not typically include e-commerce features such as a shopping cart or payment gateways. E-commerce websites, on the other hand, include these and other features specifically designed for selling products online.

Maintenance: Standard websites may require less maintenance than e-commerce websites, as they do not typically have to manage inventory, process orders, or handle customer accounts. E-commerce websites require more ongoing maintenance, as they need to keep track of inventory, process orders, and handle customer accounts.

Overall, e-commerce websites are a powerful tool for businesses looking to sell products or services online. While setting up and managing an e-commerce website requires time and effort, the potential rewards of increased revenue and a global customer base make it a worthwhile investment for many businesses.

A domain is the address that people type into their web browser to access a website. It’s a unique string of letters and numbers that identifies a specific website on the internet. For example, the domain for Google is “google.com.”

It is a set of network addresses that can be accessed using the same protocol, such as the World Wide Web (www) or a local network.

Components of a domain:

Domain name: This is the unique name that identifies a domain and allows users to access it.

Domain extension: This is the suffix at the end of a domain name, such as .com, .net, or .org.

Domain registrar: This is a company that is responsible for registering and managing domain names.

Domain name system (DNS): This is a system that translates domain names into IP addresses, which are used to locate and access websites on the Internet.

Web server: This is a computer that stores and serves the content of a website to users.

Website: This is a collection of web pages and other content that is hosted on a web server and can be accessed using a domain name.

Protocol: This is the method used to access the domain, such as HTTP or HTTPS.

Subdomain: This is an additional level of hierarchy within a domain. For example, “blog” could be a subdomain of “example.com.”

Subdirectory: This is a folder within a domain that contains additional content or resources.

A domain can contain combination of components that allows users to access websites and other online resources using a unique, human-readable name.

For example, in the URL https://blog.example.com/blog-post, “https” is the protocol, “blog” is the subdomain, “example” is the domain name, “.com” is the TLD, and “blog-post” is a subdirectory. These different parts of the domain work together to provide a unique address that can be used to access a specific resource on the Internet.

On the other hand, a website is a collection of web pages that contain content, such as text, images, videos, and other media. A website can be hosted on a server and accessed via a domain name.

A domain is like a street address for a house, while a website is like the house itself. Just as a street address tells people where to find a specific house, a domain tells people where to find a specific website.

Websites are typically accessed using a web browser, such as Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, and are made up of a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code.

Websites can be used for a variety of purposes, including providing information, selling products or services, and allowing users to interact with each other. Some websites are static, meaning that the content doesn’t change very often, while others are dynamic, with regularly updated content.

A website is typically organized into sections or pages, and may include text, images, videos, audio files, and other multimedia content. It may also include links to other websites and resources, as well as interactive elements such as forms, search boxes, and social media buttons.

Overall, a website is a digital platform that allows users to access and interact with a wide range of information and resources using a web browser.

You’re expecting to see more than just some black text on a white background and now directions on how to turn it into the website that you imagined.

Don’t worry, this is the default page the comes with WordPress and will be replaced as soon as you get started adding your own content.

So let’s dive in and take a look at the first six things to do after installing WordPress…

1. Log in and look around

First thing to do is to log in to the admin side of your site, take a look around and make the first changes. To login you need to open the login page (http://yourdomain.com/wp-login.php) and enter the username (usually “admin”) and password that you set up when you installed WordPress.

On the left side of the screen you’ll see a list of options that enable you to manage your website. Look down along the menu until you “Users” and click on it to see the user list. There’ll only be one; your admin account. As this is the default account it should be disabled to reduce the risk of it being hacked and replaced with a personal login. To do this just click on the “Add New” button at the top left of the page. You’ll need to provide the information in table.

Then just click the “Add New User” at the bottom of the screen to save your work. Once this is done log out and then log in using the new account that you’ve created. If it works, go to the “Users” section again and delete the original Admin account by pointing your mouse at the name which will give you the option to delete it (or use the checkbox option if you’re on a tablet).

2. Get Secure

As WordPress is so popular, the bad guys spend a lot of time trying to find ways break in, so let’s make it hard for them. We recommend using a plugin (the WordPress name for additional functionality) called iThemes Security to handle this for you.
To install this plugin click on “Plugins” in the menu on the left of the screen and then on “Add New” in the top left of the page that appears. This will open a page with some featured plugins and a search box on the right side. Type in “iThemes Security” and hit enter.

Click on “Install Now” and watch it installing. Then go to your plugins page again, find the iThemes Security plugin and click on “Activate”. Finally, on your plugins page, click settings for the iThemes plugin, and the top item will be “Security Check”. Click on this and then on “Secure Site” to complete the installation. Well done, you’ve just taken a big step in securing your website from the bad guys.

3. Back It Up

We all know that things can go wrong and when they do you’ll be glad of the precautions that you’ve taken. One of the best precautions you can take is to make sure that you have a regular backup of your website. This can be made much easier by installing a plugin like Updraft Plus. This will do the hard work for you and allow you to replace a part or your entire website if something goes wrong.

Simply install it using the same process as outlined earlier and when it’s activated click on “Settings” in your main WordPress menu (on the left of the page) and then click on “Updraft Plus Backups” from the sub-menu that appears.

Click on the “Settings” tab on the page that loads and choose how/where you want your backups to be saved too. Then whenever you need to make a backup (every time you change something) just click on the big “Backup Now” button and you’re covered.

4. Get Your SEO Started

If you’ve got a website you’ll want search engines (Google) to know that you exist, and to tell the world about you. To do this you need SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). In the WordPress world, one of the best tools for this is a plugin called Yoast SEO. This does not guarantee that you’ll get on page one of the search pages, but without a plugin like Yoast SEO you’ll find it much harder. It does the initial work for you that Google requires and then it evaluates your content and offers ways to improve it to meet search engine requirements.

Again, you can install it like the previous plugins and then you’ll need to set up the basics after you activate it. When it’s activated you will see a new item in the WordPress menu (on the left) called SEO. When you click on it you’ll be presented with any problems or improvements that Yoast suggests. You can skip that for now as you’ll be making changes when you develop your website that will fix this. Click on “Company Info” and fill in the details. That’s the basics done and we’ll look at the more detailed setup in a separate guide, including how to link up with Google Search Console (Yoast can connect you with other search tools too, but as nearly 90% of web searches in Ireland are on Google, we’ll concentrate on getting that right).

5. Block The Spam

One of the plugins that comes with WordPress is Akismet and it’s there to help protect you against spam. After you activate the Akismet plugin you’ll need to create a new account at akismet.com and authorise it. This will require creating an account with WordPress.com, which is different to WordPress.org, which is what you’ve got installed. However, they’re very closely related (both part of the Automattic suite of products) and having a WordPress.com is not going to cost you anything, or cause you any trouble. After this is done you can leave Akismet alone to do its work.

6. Get Personal

It’s time to make some simple changes to start putting your brand on your website. Click on Appearance in the WordPress menu and then click on “Customize” from the sub menu. On the page that loads, pick “Site Identity” and enter your site name, subtitle and then upload your logo.

Next, you’ll want to ensure that when someone lands on your webpage your web address look like “https://wpcork.com/contact-us” and not “https://wpcork.com/2016/08/sample-post” which is not as user friendly. This is an easy fix. Just click on Settings and then Permalinks in your WordPress menu. Choose “Post Name” and click “Save Changes”. Job done.

Now that you’ve done all the hard work, give yourself a pat on the back and relax knowing that your website is off to a solid start. Alternatively, if you are not into DIY, you can contact us and we’ll take care of your site setup for you.

When you decide that you’re going to use WordPress to build your website, the first question is “Where do I start?” and “How do I install WordPress?”. With many sources to get detailed instructions, such as the WordPress Codex (the home of WordPress knowledge) it can be a bit daunting and off-putting if you’re new to this world.

It doesn’t need to be hard and if you’re using a quality hosting company, such as Wupav Hosting or Blacknight you can take advantage of their helpful installation tools. These will walk you through the process and install WordPress for you.

If your provider uses cPanel look for “Softaculous App Installer” for the easiest way to complete your WordPress installation.

Some Technical Considerations…

There are a number of different setups available when installing WordPress and you will need to make some decisions before finalising the installation. There are no wrong answers and thinking about the following options in advance will help after your installation is completed…

Linux or Windows:

After you have registered your domain the next question will be “Windows or Linux Hosting?”. Most people will go with Windows hosting as it’s the one that’s more recognisable. From a WordPress point of view the main difference is that WordPress cannot be installed in the root directory of the Windows option. This means that your website will read like yourdomain.com/directory and you will need to redirect it to yourdomain.com. If you decide to go with Linux you will able to install WordPress in the root directory and remove the need to manually create a redirect.

Database Prefix:

Talking about databases and prefixes sounds a bit vague and if you’re not familiar with WordPress it’ll make no sense. But the answer is simple; When WordPress databases are created on installation they come with a default prefix of “WP” so that they look like “wp-databasefile.php”. To help your security and to make it harder for the bad guys to find out about your setup we recommend changing this. The choice is yours, but make it short and memorable, such as jfk-database.php. You can also do this using a security plugin like iThemes Security. Adding this plugin is one of the first things to do after you install WordPress.

Accessing the Admin Area:

Once you have installed WordPress you will be able to log in to the admin area to start modifying and customising your website by opening yourdomain/wp-login.php. Don’t forget to change “wp” to the database prefix that you used during the installation. From here your WordPress journey begins.

Manually Install WordPress:

You can also install WordPress manually but this requires a good grasp of using FTP and we recommend that you use the instructions in the WordPress Codex if this is how you want to complete your installation.

If you have any questions on installing WordPress or other WordPress topics we’d love to hear from you. Just Contact Us and we’ll point you in the right direction.
